6th Concession

As I drove down 6th Concession, I glanced in the rearview mirror. She had faded from view long ago, back to the Atlantic coast. A sliver of what could have been, a fragment of time wrapped in the canvas cloth of my own haunting. In the dark, I mentally traced the outline of the moon, the sole constant in my midnight wanderings.

And then I stood underneath those dimmed lights, for as he walked past he noticed me for the first time.

There we were again at 5 a.m., and I could not fathom how our conversations led to this crossroad. Blanketed in covers that were not mine, I questioned it all.

Yet as I laid there in a room I hadn’t seen since those autumn days, I let the bitterness fall away.
