The opening keyboard notes begin
leaving no vacancy for conversation,
and my mind recollects the scatter
with a head rush that lights up this dusty evening.
The biting winds lift up those browned leaves
and that was the first season;
a carefully framed chapter
preserved by an unrelenting love – mine.
Those concrete sidewalks glow in memory,
my favourite once upon another time;
bittersweet kisses on wooden bar stools
and every morning drive to the falls.
The world condenses to two cities wide
as I pull at the tangled remains once more –
the faded skirts and your rosy cheeks,
trademarks of our evanescence.
